01 / One item or job

Build your cost base.

Use the same basis for every amount: one item, one project or one billable service. Allocate overheads to that same unit.

02 / Your pricing picture

Know what remains.

Enter your direct costs to begin.

Complete every field with a non-negative number. Target margin plus percentage fees must be below 100%.

Margin ≠ markup

They use different denominators.

With costs of 100 and no fees, a 25% markup gives a price of 125 and a 20% margin. To earn a 25% margin, the price is 133.33 before rounding. Profit margin divides profit by selling price; markup divides the uplift by costs.

How we calculate

Price = (direct costs + labour hours × hourly cost + overheads + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − margin% ÷ 100 − fee% ÷ 100).

Use costs excluding recoverable sales tax. Include non-recoverable tax in costs. This tool does not add VAT/GST/sales tax or calculate income tax. Check your local rules and full costs before quoting. Fees are assumed to apply to the pre-sales-tax price; adjust for your provider’s actual fee basis.
