1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 2 Peter 2:1-3
BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS
The subject issue of false prophets is all over the bible. It is certainly not a new thing. What makes it appear new to many people today is that we have not been taught how to spot or mark false teachers, thus when we finally learn, we find ourselves shocked because we’ve never thought that the most trusted of the clergy could be false prophets. It is always scary to discover that the so called “men of God” could be wrong. I remember 6years ago, I used to defend Benny Hinn as the man chosen by God to heal the people. I didn’t want to hear any criticism concerning him and I believed that one day I will meet him and he would lay his hand on me and I would be healed of any disease in my body.
In 2011, God opened my eyes and showed me the heresy contained in Hinn’s teachings and also in the teachings of other TBN/FAITH teachers. I then held to Chris Oyakhilome and believed his teachings were true but then again while watching his program on television God showed me that this man was not to be trusted. I was sadden by the realization of the heresy preached by the men on television.
These men are not preachers, they are shop owners. They sell lies in exchange for money. Every bit of truth (if any), is sold for money. My estimate is, 70% of their teachings is about money. Sometimes they demand the money and sometimes they beg for it. These calls for money are always coupled with threats or promises which are supposed to be from God, and such, will be carried out based on whether one gives money or withholds it.
Apostle Peter warned us in his second epistle,
- 1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”
(2 Peter 2:1-3)
The passage above is showing us the deeds of these false prophets. He says that, they will privily (secretly) introduce damnable heresies (false teachings). This means these false prophet will not come out in public and say “Hi everyone, I am a false prophet and I’d like to give you false teachings” but they will come in as good guys and give these false teachings under the radar.
The Lord Jesus Christ has taught us to watch out for these false prophets and he likens their unscrupulous behavior to the viciousness of wolves. This is what he says,
- “15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
These deceivers are “coming in sheep’s clothing,” that means they come in as believers. They look, talk, sing and act like Christians but their mission is to deceive. Peter says, “through covetousness shall they with feigned (deceptive/fictitious) words make merchandise (business) of you.” Yes, he said they will make merchandise of you. Don’t you see how crafty they are in using the scriptures in order to pick your pockets. They talk about “revelation knowledge” and this knowledge of theirs seems to be more interested in your money than in your spiritual well being. They always teach messages that are encouraging self glorification rather than Christ glorification. They love money and physical wealth more than the God who made the heavens and the earth. Not only are they false teachers but they are idolatrous false teachers.
DECEIVING AND BEING DECEIVED
Many of these false teachers are very sincere in their “faith.” They truly believe that what they teach the masses is the truth of God. They call upon the name of Christ out of sincerity, yet, they remain deceived because most of what they teach does not honor the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus warned,
- 1 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
You see, these people sincerely called Jesus “Lord” and in His name they prophesied, cast out demons and performed wonders but the Lord Jesus Christ will say unto them, “I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Paul also gives a number of warnings against false teachers, and he shows them to be deceived.
- “But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.”
(2 Timothy 3:13)
These false teachers will grow worse and worse in their deception. They will continue to deceive and being deceived and deceiving one another. They will continue to sow divisions in the body of Christ by introducing these damnable heresies. Unless we learn to mark them and avoid them, we too shall fool into their falsehood and find ourselves spreading their lies, like the wind driving a wild fire.
“17 Now I beseech you, brethren MARK THEM which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. – Romans 16:17-18
