It is a consuming thought to bear and many are trying their best to evade such thought. More often we hear protesters say, “My God is a kind God, He never gets angry!” I cannot dispute that they know a kind god, who let’s everyone off the hook that easily. He, their god is convenient for their lusts and abominable ways. Some dare to say, “We need not to be afraid of God, He is a loving Father”
I agree without a speck of doubt that God is good, merciful, kind and loving but we must consider that the bible speaks more of the judgment, the wrath of God and that God would punish the wicked people.
Psalms 7:11 records that, “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”. God’s wrath burns everyday against the wicked, against sinners, against those who reject His Son, against those who despise His commands, against such as delight in evil. Even apostle Paul observed in Romans 1:18 ” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”
Though Paul spoke and wrote about grace, He did also point out that God has His wrath revealed from heaven against those who do not fear the Lord. Even Jesus Christ, being a savior, He did not stop speaking about judgment and He constantly taught His disciples to keep watch because they knew not when He shall return. Listen to what Jesus is saying in Matthew 25:46 “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” John also quoted God Almighty, Alpha and Omega, in Revelation 21:8 saying, “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
While others are saying we must not condemn people with our preaching, Jesus says, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:18. Condemnation is not brought by preachers but the very unbelief of the people against God’s Son is condemnation upon those who reject Him. They judge themselves unworthy of the gift of grace that God have granted through the death and resurrection of His only begotten Son.
God’s wrath was poured out upon the world before the flood and it was poured out upon Sodom and Gomorrah, do you think God did not love the people before the flood? Do you think God did not love the Sodomites? Do you think God was unjust to the people of Gomorrah? Do you think He did not love the people of Jericho? Surely the Lord loved His people but because they did not glorify Him as God, His indignation was brought upon them and they were all destroyed, except the very few who found favor from the LORD?
God is jealous, He said so Himself, (Exodus 20:4) “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a JEALOUS God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me” (EMPHASIS MINE)
Exodus 34:14 ” For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:”
Deuteronomy 4:24 “For the Lord thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.”
( For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth. Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God…”
God’s jealousy brings up His wrath against those who serve other gods. Committing sin is idolatry because anyone who commits a sin is fulfilling the will of the devil who is the god of this world. Not believing in Jesus Christ is a sin. And John tells us that, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” (John 3:36) Irrespective of the religion or church denomination one belongs to, without Christ in their life they are condemned and are under the burning wrath of the Most High God! Christians must wake up and warn the nations, sound the trumpet upon the cities and distance villages. God’s love and mercy can never be appreciated by us, unless His wrath is revealed unto us. Peter in 2 Peter 2:6 says, “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly.” They were made an example for those who afterwards should live ungodly.
