“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”
1 Corinthians 1:18
I don’t blame the world for finding it hard to believe the gospel that we preach. It sounds foolish, or better yet insane to hear that the Just and Holy God, can actually justify sinners. It sounds ridiculous that a sacrifice of the Son of God that was offered over 2000 years ago can justify a sinner today. It is out of this world that God would offer His Son, His only begotten Son in order to save His enemies, for every sinner is an enemy of God. The world thinks of God as an enormous human being, who has limitations as every human being and a wicked heart like all the sons of men. It is hard for the world to comprehend the ways of God. It is very difficult to imagine a creditor, paying a debt on behalf of his debtor and then give him a monthly allowance to live thereof for the rest of his life. Yes, we cannot see that happen because human beings often do not show mercy. Yet God who is not a human being but who is God, have more capabilities beyond what men could think. God is able to justify a sinner, not by works of righteous because a sinner is incapable of producing such works. God can help that self same sinner to remove that sin which binds him and then give him a new heart and mind that would allow a sinner to live a God pleasing life.
Justification is by faith
Every sinner is condemned to hell. That is the truth many do not want face. All sinners must go to hell. God revealed this to His prophets that “a soul that sins it must die” (Ezekiel 18:4) and that “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) and in Romans 3:10-18
“10.As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11.There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12.They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13.Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14.Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15.Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16.Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17.And the way of peace have they not known:
18.There is no fear of God before their eyes.” And again “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23
These words are condemning the whole world to hell, even those who are viewed as religious or good people. “There is none righteous, no, not one” means just that, there is no good person, not even one. For all have sinned and therefore must die. No amount of good works can bring any man to a state of righteousness, for all men are born in sin. The Psalmist once cried, in Psalm 51:5 “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
The way to escape is the way that seems rather foolish. A way that requires nothing but faith in Jesus Christ. No work at all. This indeed sounds unreal. Very few people manage to find this way of salvation and the reason for that is, it doesn’t have room for loads of good works. Jesus did says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Jesus speaks of a strait gate and a narrow way. If this gate is strait it means all burdens must be forsaken before attempting entry and if the way is narrow, it means who ever walks on it must be careful as to how and where they tread for there are lots of restrictions and stumbling blocks. Then Jesus says, few shall find it!
People look at this strait gate and think to themselves, “I must quit my years of efforts and attempts to save myself? Surely that cannot be right.” and therefore prefer to find wide gate and broad way, which is easy to find and easier to enter. The true message of the cross of Christ is hardly preached in the churches today, because it calls sinners to repentance and condemn those who reject the way of God.
Oh dear reader, God indeed saves but the whole plan of salvation involves us throwing away our own righteousness and taking upon us that of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 (Corinthians 5:21). God justifies us through faith in His Son. “Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:9-10)
Let us believe the message and witness that God gives about His Son, He have indeed gave us eternal life and that life is in His Son, Jesus Christ.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
