“Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,” Romans 1:21-22
In this day and age, many people have the knowledge of God and admit that He exists but they deny Him in everything they do. They admit that requests must be made to God through prayer but are not prepared to submit to His authority. They oppose almost everything that is of God’s interest and adopt everything that will be favorable to their own selves. They attempt to change God for their own benefit and they even think to command God to move and act in their favor.
The teachings of Paul have been widely misunderstood, and the reason for that is that people focus on the good and favorable part of Paul’s messages and leave out the hard and unfavorable part. One of the examples is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Paul here was not talking about passing a year end exams or landing a job or becoming a billionaire but he referred to his personal experiences in the ministry. It is not rocket science to see that, because verse 11 & 12 shows us “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.”
Many preachers are teaching people that if they are poor it means that they are not godly enough. So one has to come to Christ to get wealth and a better life, because according to these preachers, “God wants us to drive the best cars, live in best houses and enjoy the best of this life.” This statement is not only a lie but it insinuates that Jesus is a pocket god or a lucky charm. It also contradict what Jesus said in Luke 12:15 “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” The items one possesses do not compute the value of his or her life. One’s life can only be measured by his/her fruits that the Lord requires from them. These fruits are revealed in Galatians 5:22-23, when one exhibits these fruits and having none of the physical possessions, except for the clothes on their back, they prove to be more valuable than a man who owns the whole world.
A human being can neither use nor control God, even if they are a born again Christian. The word of God cannot be used for personal gain. When ever I hear the idea of naming and claiming in the name of Jesus, it sounds like the idea I heard on the documentary based on the book by Rhonda Byrne, The Secret. This is an out right lie from the father of lies, the devil. The God who would be ordered around by human beings must be an imaginary god who exist only in the minds of the people, to suit their unrepentant and perverted lifestyles. Jesus teaches us to ask, not to demand and claim nor to send signals to a god, to the universe nor to the “Supreme Being.” This is idolatry. We have no legal right before God to demand anything, since we owe God our lives. We violated His law and we owed to die, God came to our rescue by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross of Calvary and by grace we are saved. What sort of a man who would adopt a wretched beggar who owed him a fortune, make him one of them that are of his household and be patient with him when He demands and claim things which He does not own? Surely he would cast the ungrateful beggar out for his pride. Have we not learned from Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” God owns everything, including us, the human beings. We don’t own God and none of the religions can truthfully claim to have God in their possession. Paul even says, “you are bought with a price” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Our life purposes can only be fulfilled when we obey the word of God. Even Deuteronomy 28:1 says “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:” God is not an idol, He is God and demands that His commandments be kept!!!
