What is wrong with prosperity gospel?

The Spokes-dude at Work

What is wrong with prosperity gospel? Well, I will tell you what…

I have heard many preachers from TV, internet and live, preaching about prosperity and blessings as though that is the only thing that matters in the kingdom of God. I like to challenge all the prosperity seekers with the word of God.  I agree that the bible tells us that we would be blessed and that we should prosper, but the bible has also laid down conditions for us to reach that state of prosperity.

Must you claim your blessings from the Lord?

Not really, we are not by any chance allowed to demand anything from the Lord. The bible say we should ask. Asking goes with obedience. “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you” John 15:16, KJV. The blessings and receiving what we ask depends upon obedience to God’s word not upon claiming and demanding, see also Deuteronomy 28:1. “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.” ESV.

If you do not identify with the constitution of the Kingdom of God which is His word then you have no right to claim anything in Jesus’ name, no matter how much faith you think you have. Today we see hundreds of people failing to live a holy life because when they came to Christ they didn’t come for eternal life and forgiveness but they came for blessings and job promotions, cars, houses and ultimately to get a husband/wife. I am not saying that it is wrong to teach about prosperity, all I am saying is, there is no prosperity outside faith, without which there is no pleasing God and such faith comes by hearing  and hearing by the word of God (Roman 10:17). If then we hear the word of God and disobey it, how can we then please God and how can we stand before Him and demand or claim whatever that is reserved for those who obey His word? Surely we will not gain anything but wrath.

Jesus taught “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:33, take note. Jesus says seek first the kingdom of God. He doesn’t say go and demand things and be disrespectful. When he says seek first the Kingdom of God He means, seek first to be ruled and governed by God’s standards and then all your needs will be covered. He says, seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. The righteousness of God is the only qualification that allows us to present ourselves before God, and that is  why “He made Him sin who knew no sin so that we might be the righteousness of God through Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21, and again “so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. ” 1 Thessalonians 3:13

Making money today has become a priority in our churches and many people have compromised the gospel of Jesus Christ due to fear of losing membership and thus losing the offerings and eventually losing personal income. I am not ashamed to say this because it is the evil that has crept into the churches of God. The rich non-believers and perverted individuals has been allowed to serve the holy people of God in the churches as though they were sanctified by God for service, yet in their hearts they curse Jesus and  nail Him to the cross over and over again.

I am against all those pastors and evangelists who say “trust God with R1000 and God is gonna heal you” or ” trust God with R10 000 and God is gonna bless you with marriage.” That is not biblical, it is evil and it should be condemned by all bible believing Christians.  If God has entrusted you with the ministry, he will finance it, you need to trust God. You don’t have to trick people and make promises on behalf of God. You are supposed to preach the word of God that is giving hope and allowing people to know Christ the savior instead of showing them Christ the provider.

Don’t try to be popular but try by all means to be in good standing with God. Trying to please men is a trap that will cause you to fall from grace. Not everyone is going to believe what you preach and most of the people are going to be cross with the word you preach. Don’t be surprised, they were cross with Jesus Christ. Be faithful to God and he will show Himself strong on your behalf ( 2 Chronicles 16:9)
